3 Reasons Why You SHOULD Work Out on Your Period

I know what you’re thinking, “heck no. just give me all the chocolate and leave me alone!” We want to be left alone in the comfort of our PJs and bed with not one care in the world. But if you could just hear me out for a second, I want to tell you why working out (specifically HIIT workouts) during your period may actually be a good idea.

So why am I event talking about this dreaded time of the month? Well, I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately asking me if working out on your period is a no-no or a go-go. My straight answer? Absolutely! Below, I’ll give you a couple reasons why it’s actually a great idea to workout during this time of the month and some tips to make it, well, a little more bearable! 

Reason #1- Get More Out of Your Workout

Our cycles have an immense impact on our hormones. As females, we have higher estrogen levels than males which mean we derive most of our energy from fat during exercise. With that being said, being on your period is a great time to get in a workout, specifically, a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout. Why, you ask? When we start our period, progesterone and estrogen levels drop meaning we are able to better utilize glycogen aka our stored carbs! During this time we’re able to dig a little deeper and push harder than any other time of the month when our estrogen levels are higher. During this time you won’t only have more endurance but you’ll also have a much higher pain tolerance so next time you’re on your period, grab that extra weight and lift heavier! 

Reason #2- Less Water Retention

Duh. Our bodies hold water. But did you know that when on your period, it’s more common? That’s why we’re prone to feel more bloated and irritable. Water retention during our period happens because we’re not drinking enough water before and during our period. Dehydration causes water retention because the body likes to keep what it has and if it’s not getting anymore, it’s not going to flush out what it does have. So, how do we solve this? Drink more water! It’s extremely important to stay hydrated on a daily basis but to help reduce the bloating, make sure to stay hydrated during your period. I like to drink at least a gallon of water a day just to make sure that my body continues to do its job, and keep everything flushed and moving the way it should!

Reason #3- Reduces Stress

We all know that on our period, we’re more apt to increase our levels of stress and if you’re lucky (sarcasm), even have the occasional migraine. We also know that exercise affects our hormone levels, specifically, our endorphins. When we workout, our body secretes those endorphins that help reduce stress, headaches, and wait for it… cramps. The more we exercise, the more those endorphins are released, and the more we feel better. Say hellooo to relief! 

I hope these tips help you stay consistent with your exercise program next time your period wants to keep you down. Yes, our periods have to exist but let’s not let it keep us from achieving our fitness goals. Please let me know if you have any questions or how you like to workout on your period!

Before I share the workout, I wanted to explain briefly what “no impact” means. It doesn’t mean that this workout will not impact your body but rather that it won’t impact your knees like a jumping workout would! I know sometimes my knees hurt depending on the time of the month so I like to share different styles of workout with you in case your knees hurt from time to time like mine do! 😅 Try it out and tag me to let me know how you liked it! 💪🏼

1️⃣ Relevé (on your toes) Plié Squat w/ press into plié pulses
2️⃣ Sumo Plié Squat w/ curl into pulses 
3️⃣ Single Leg RDL into High Knee into pulses
4️⃣ Curtsy Lunge w/ abduction into pulses

You’ll do 10 reps of the first exercise and you’ll go straight into the pulses for 20Reps! Repeat the whole thing 4-5x! Enjoy! Yoga mat is from @levavi.co✨ 🖤 also this is the very last workout in my old apartment 😂 can’t wait to share the new *v empty* space with youuuuu 🥰

Our house couldn’t be more perfect and I’m so overwhelmingly happy to begin this season of our lives. Thank you for all the love on my stories and of course, for your encouragement over the years. It’s not always easy to share your struggles on the internet but y’all have made this journey a little easier with all your love and support. This was my workout yesterday and girl, I am feeling it today! As a reminder, don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and go heavier on the weights! Of course, be mindful of form so you don’t risk injury but do challenge yourself! Ok, let’s get to it! 💪🏼

3️⃣ DB Around the Worlds
4️⃣ DB 90* Raise into Lateral Raise
5️⃣ DB Press into Y Press

7️⃣ DB Overhead Tricep Extension
8️⃣ Push-Ups focusing on the negative. Slow on the way down and power up!

🔥 We’ll be hitting each exercise for 40secs all out and then resting for 20secs, completing the circuit 4-5x! You are more than welcome to do reps of each exercise (ex:4x12) instead of it being timed but I find that it really ramps up the “HIIT” aspect of this workout when I time them! If you’re doing single leg stuff, just do 40secs of each side! I’m telling you- this one is a GREAT one to target the whole body!! 🖤
